Material[edit]

You should definitely bring :[edit]

  • Your laptop ( if you ain't got no laptop: paper and pen will be available :-) )
  • A powersplitter
  • Bring an ethernet cable : your private lifeline if the ether gets too polluted
  • If you stay overnight : Bring sleeping mat & bag (there's only minimal comfort at hackerspace bxl)

If possible, bring:[edit]

  • Your compatible router
  • Your own dish / fork / knife
  • An ethernet switch (handy if some people have one)
  • A chair : if you're coming by car bring a chair (we've got some but if it gets too crowded people will have to sit on the floor)
  • A serial adaptor (3.3v/5v ttl to RS232/USB adaptor)

We'll provide:[edit]

  • ASUS WL-HDD boxes (5 of those)
  • some bricked Linksys boxes, some non-bricked ones.
  • some place to lay down at night (though, take your sleepingbag etc)

Date[edit]

Saturday+Sunday 24+25 Jan

Location[edit]

[[[location | void*pointer]]] 1030 Bruxelles

Goals[edit]

  • install/configure/debug OpenWRT yourself
  • a chance to meetup with Belgium techies/geeks/hackers/…
  • learn new ways to (de)brick your router
  • How to build your own *.ipk packages (example with ucarp)
  • How to add a new arch/router
  • How to add a webinterface with LUCI
  • How to use JTAG to revive your router
  • Have fun!

Fees[edit]

We will ask you 5EUR for the whole weekend in order to finance the 2 train tickets of Florian and Nico. Food & drinks are available! The revenue helps us pay for the transport costs of the speakers…

Devs[edit]

Florian Fainelli and Nicolas Thill from OpenWRT team will be present.

Nicolas Thill[edit]

Nicolas Thill bought his first router in 2004 and taken by the versatility of the OpenWRT mini-distribution, he cross-compiles & packages everything which he can think of, and joins the OpenWRT dev-team (who grew tired of integrating all his patches) end of 2004. Since then he's been maintaining the packages and contributed code to some target architectures (eg AR7, UML, x86). Recently he's been working on the toolchain and added the option to choose for libc implementation.

Florian Fainelli[edit]

Florian is in the OpenWRT dev team since nov 2005, back then mainly maintaining packages, afterwards got interested in kernel development and porting the kernel to different architectures.

Aftermath[edit]

Hello,

The OpenWRT weekend is over and it was great!

Facts:
- We had 24 people
- We covered the costs
- It was great fun!

What was good:
- interesting stuff was happening everywhere
- everybody was actively doing their stuff
- food and drinks were nice (still volunteers wanted to do the dishes ;)
- our uplink survived...

Better for the next OpenWRT workshop:
- there were almost no talks, only one at midnight about packaging (wich was
intersting)
-> one developer was sick and did not made it.
- provide step-by-step documentation to install OpenWRT from zero to shell.

Did you like it? Did you disliked it? What could have been better?
Please provide feedback to contact at hackerspace.be

Foremost we want to thank:
- Nico and Massoud for coming over and helping setting up the network
fridaynight!
- Italy and Sweden for flying over!
- Steven to provide the Fonera routers
- Pascal for using the most soldering iron
- the cooks for providing the flying spaghetti

For people interested in more OpenWRT:
There will be an OpenWRT hacknight the saturday night of Fosdem (7/02)
Please register on doodle (HackerSpace Brussels can contain +- 25 people):
